Education

"As a society, we have no greater responsibility than educating our children." - John Garamendi

I Put the Children First
When we discuss education we must always put the children first. Students must be our top priority. We cannot flourish as a society if we fail to provide the next generation with hope for their future and the tools to succeed. It is only by investing in our children and their education that we ensure that every child has possibility of achieving the American dream.

Environment

I am deeply committed to protecting the environment. During my 30 years of public service, I have made substantial contributions toward safeguarding our environment for future generations. My environmental record, detailed below is a clear indication that you can count on me to be aggressive in developing and advocating for solutions to these and other challenges.

Foreign Relations

Ever since my wife Patti and I embarked on a journey that would forever shape our lives – our two years fighting smallpox in rural Ethiopia as volunteers in the Peace Corps – my perspective on foreign policy has been shaped by three primary principles. 1) America’s moral authority as the world’s leader of free nations rests on a devotion to human rights and individual liberty for all citizens of all nations. 2) Diplomacy should always be our first mission in international relations, and ultimately, is almost always the best way to resolve conflicts abroad.

Health Care

In Congress, I am working with Congressional Democrats to fight for a robust public option, continue to be a tireless advocate for single-payer health care, and defend Medicare and Medi-Cal. We face a well-funded insurance and drug company opposition in Washington, and that is why it is more important than ever for the 10th Congressional District to have a representative with a proven track record fighting for universal health care access. These are not just words; this is a lifelong passion.

Jobs

Working with the Governor, I have revitalized the California Commission for Economic Development, transforming this important body into a powerhouse for generating ideas that invigorate and enhance our economy, and to create opportunities for future growth, research, development and new markets.

Seniors

One can measure the greatness of a society in how it treats its seniors. The men and women who spent decades building the foundations of America must be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve in their golden years.

Social Justice

We must have equal opportunity for all. The New Orleans disaster removed the veil on poverty in America. California also has its hidden poverty and social and economic inequities. We cannot guarantee that everyone will be rich, but we should strive to provide everyone with the opportunity to achieve success. The elimination of racial and economic barriers must be our goal.

Transportation

The 10th Congressional District is a major transportation corridor, connecting the Bay Area to the Central Valley and the nation. Congestion on the freeways and railways plagues the region, delaying commuters, wasting time and fuel, and adding to air and atmospheric pollution. As your Congressman I will seek a seat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and pry money out of Congress to expand public transportation systems and improve highways that serve the Solano, Contra Costa, and Livermore areas.

Veterans

Those who have put service to our nation above all else deserve our respect, our thanks and our assurance that the doors to the future will be open to them. We must demand that education, job training, healthcare, and housing be readily available to these heroes. California is at a critical juncture, and the investments we make now in educating our people are key to our collective success in the years to come. Those returning to California from service in Iraq and Afghanistan have much to give our state, and our state has much to gain from educating them.
