California's specialty crop industry accounts for about half of all domestic farmgate crop value but has received relatively little funding in Farm Bill programs. The 2008 Farm Bill included new funding for Specialty Crop Block Grants, the Specialty Crop Research Initiative, assistance for organic production, local food marketing and promotion, beginning and disadvantaged farmers, and other key programs that help to strengthen this sector. We request that support for these programs be maintained, and that funding be increased to reflect their effectiveness in creating new jobs, stimulating local economies, improving public health, and increasing access to healthy foods for children, seniors, and low-income citizens.
"America's universities are an important resource for the development of energy technologies that serve our national defense needs, and I am pleased that Congressman Garamendi recognizes the role we play," said Nicole Woolsey Biggart, Director of the Energy Efficiency Center at the University of California Davis. “UC Davis is working with the Department of the Navy on efficient lighting technologies and I hope that our work on energy efficient cooling, building envelopes, water efficiency and transportation will contribute to the safety and comfort of our troops wherever they serve. We welcome this development."
"Access to health care is a fundamental right that empowers us to live happy, healthy lives and strengthens our community," said Congressman Garamendi, who served as California's Insurance Commissioner for eight years. "Community clinics provide health services - ranging from prenatal care to chronic disease management and mental health care - that make this right a reality."
"California simply does not presently have enough available water to meet the needs of everyone in the state. We must invest in American-made water recycling – along with conservation and additional storage – and that's why I’m excited by these projects," Congressman Garamendi said. "These projects bring us one step closer to saving the Delta while meeting the needs of all California cities, farmers, and fishermen."
"My Republican colleagues often talk about what the founding fathers wanted. I’m right there with them. When George Washington was inaugurated as our nation’s first president, he refused to wear a suit made in England and sought an American clothier," said Congressman Garamendi. "We could Make It In America then. We can Make it In America now."
"First, I would like to speak to the importance of extending the Federal Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit (PTC). Since its adoption in 1992, this financial incentive has provided stability in the energy market. Over the past five years, the PTC has helped the wind energy sector grow at an average of 35 percent a year. Today there are 75,000 jobs supported by the wind industry across all 50 states, including manufacturing jobs at over 470 facilities. About 4,000 to 5,000 of those jobs are in my home state of California. Most recently in my district, I toured a wind farm site that said they would continue expanding only if the PTC was extended," said Congressman Garamendi.
Garamendi said, "There is a significant American made content difference in their bids and approximately a 5% price difference. At stake is a $3 billion investment in American jobs and manufacturing capacity. You have an opportunity to instruct them to resubmit their final bids to achieve maximum domestic content and the best price. Tell them to get a sharp pencil and come back in 90 days with their last and best final offer."
"This is a good day," said Congressman John Garamendi. "At a time when we need jobs, clean technology, and advanced manufacturing, this Dixon plant delivers all three. Because of this facility, more than a hundred families in our region will have the economic opportunity that comes with a good reliable job."
"This project is a win-win-win for Solano County and Northern California," said Congressman John Garamendi. "Drivers will experience reduced traffic congestion and commute times, helping them get to their work and homes faster and safer. The I-80 Cordelia Truck Scales Relocation Project will also help expedite goods movement for Northern California, by enabling commodities and goods to move with more efficiency from the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada's to the Bay Area and beyond. All the while, strengthening the competitiveness of local businesses and most importantly, creating badly needed construction jobs for the region."
"Our tax dollars for transportation projects should go toward manufacturing American equipment and employing American workers – that's just common sense," said Congressman John Garamendi."When we Make It In America, we create jobs throughout the entire economy – and creating jobs must be our top priority."
